Women's Empowerment: Case Study

5/23/2015

Ada lived with her husband, Raj, and four children in government housing for the homeless. They had little, but were honest. Five years ago Raj was seemingly befriended by Vijay, a property dealer who also gambled. Since then Vijay had often come to Raj’s home.  Ada did not mind as they appeared to enjoy each other’s company.

One day, Vijay arrived announcing he had won a considerable sum of money.  To celebrate, he gave Raj money to buy sweets for the family and other essentials.  Raj left with the children, leaving Ada alone in the house with Vijay. While Raj was out, Vijay allegedly attempted to sexually assault Ada, but Raj returned unexpectedly.  As Raj walked in on the chaos, Vijay picked up a knife, stabbed Ada, and fled the house.

WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT: Latest Update

5/15/2015

In total, the Sai Maa Woman's Empowerment project has now been in operation 7 months. As part of this  project, the Sai Maa Woman's shelter has been supporting women in need for 4 months. In the past 3 months, 62 new cases have been opened as well as providing ongoing support to many previous cases. In addition, there have been 326 calls to the help line and 166 women have come to the center for counseling. The top 2 reasons for needing support continue to be domestic violence and sexual assault.

A recurring theme in the domestic violence cases is a lack of skills and/or confidence. Often the women state they do not understand what is going on in the family, making it difficult for them to participate. This further undermines their confidence. To address this, skills training is provided at the women’s empowerment center. Between February and April, a number of training courses were offered in addition to the individual counseling. This included training in human rights, women’s rights and vocational training in revenue producing skills such as vegetable pickling.

Just One: Sathya Sai Maa Moksha Dham

As part of the Just One program for the underprivileged children in slum areas, the Sai Maa Vishnu Shakti Trust holds a monthly feeding for the local children at the Sathya Sai Maa Moksha Dham.  It is great to be able to serve the children and families that live in our own Harishchandra Ghat community.  The children all know us by name now, but they are still a relatively unruly bunch as compared to the areas that we go to where educators teach the children manners.  Still, they are our unruly children and are so friendly whenever we see them on the streets.
