JUST ONE FEEDING : Chauka Ghat

It is a beautiful November day, cool and sunlit with not a cloud in the sky. Today's feeding is in Chauka Ghat and the community we are serving resides on the property of the Indian Railroads system.  A village has been built on this government easement between the actual rail lines and the start of private land.  It is actually quite a large parcel of land.

The village is vibrant with activity.  In every corner that I look, I see activities in addition to the primary reason why I am here today, the Just One feeding program for impoverished children.  The boys are playing a game similar to the Indian pastime of cricket.  The girls who are not involved with the rolling of the dough, cooking of the vegetables or frying of the puri are engaged in sharing circles, caring for the youngest babies and roaming livestock, or tending to their daily chores.

JUST ONE FEEDING : Ravindrapuri

Ravindrapuri is the one of the closest areas to the site of the Sathya Sai Maa Moksha Dham in Harishchandra Ghat that is supported by the Just One program. On this particular day, most of the children are still in school when we begin the feeding at 1pm.  It is going to be a long program as children are being continually fed as they return from classes.

The winter months are the best time for the feeding program and so Just One will be increasing the number of food distributions over this time.  Distributions will be scheduled each week.  During the summer months, the sun is so intense that temperatures can reach 115 F/ 46 C.  In addition to the heat, there are often strong gusts of wind that continually blow dirt into the children's plates and faces.  In contrast the winter months bring healthier appetites and a need for meals that warm the body.

Women's Empowerment : October update

11/11/2014

After opening last month, this month Sathya Sai Maa Shakti Dayini continued to increase its presence in the social work communities of Varanasi. Cases are now being referred to the center by the public, and the center has also had cases brought by teachers in local girls’ schools. In addition it is now actively participating in a women’s support network stretching across India, referring cases and having cases referred.

This month most new cases were related to domestic violence, with additional cases covering sexual assault, murder and dowry issues.   In addition to the 33 new cases attended to this month, 26 cases are receiving ongoing support from the Shakti Dayini case workers - through counseling, legal assistance or ongoing training in life skills.

JUST ONE FEEDING : Pancha Pandawa

The small area known as Pancha Pandawa is a village on the outskirts of Varanasi. It is a smaller village that has been selected by staff of ASMITA, our local distribution partner, for today’s program.

What first strikes me when I arrive is the tight knit social structure of this particular village.  Everyone seems to be one big family.  More than just knowing everyone else's business, they outwardly care for each other.  The first thing that happens when I get off my motorcycle is that I am guided to meet one of the handicapped children.  She looks to be a girl of 10 or so, but I learn that her growth was stunted at birth.  Then another mother brings her handicapped child to meet me.  We spend 20 minutes getting to know each other.  This feeling of being welcomed and included into a large family is the tenor of the day's feeding for me.

JUST ONE FEEDING : SHIVPUR

11/6/2014

On the 6th November a food distribution was held at Shivapur, on the outskirts of Varanasi.  It is in a semi-rural area and several communities from different villages are part of today’s program.   After a long drive we find ourselves in a quiet farming community – carts of hay are hauled along the road, a goat is tethered in the eating area, and the men are gathered around the water well watching the women and children prepare the food.

Some of the children who join us today come from primitive villages with few facilities, including a large community of snake charmers.  These families subsist by charming snakes and offering this as entertainment and service.  Many of these children are covered in dust, their clothes old, almost rags, and their hair dirty and ratty. They seem unsure, even hesitant when they arrive but they devour the food ravenously.
