On the 30th November Just One returned to the Sathya Sai Maa Moksha Dham at Harishchandra Ghat to continue its monthly food distribution. Although scheduled for an 11.30am start, the children from the nearby school are already sitting patiently and quietly by 11.00am. This changes quickly when the local street children join the gathering. In contrast to the friendly but quiet and disciplined students with their teachers, these children bring a riot of noise, laughter, activity and general boisterousness to the wait.
The Sai Maa Cataract Surgery program for 2014-15 began on November 22, 2015. The best time of the year in Varanasi for cataract surgeries, and the only time we run the Sai Maa camps, is during the winter months in India. During the rest of the year, it is extremely hot and the chance of infection skyrockets to unacceptable levels. This is now our 4th year running the cataract program for the villagers in and around Varanasi. The Sai Maa Vishnu Shakti Trust, in partnership with the Vivekanand Mission, has a phenomenal track record over these last 3 years having maintained a 100% success rate with our surgeries.
On Saturday 7th November 2016 the Just One team held its monthly meal distribution at the Sathya Sai Maa Moksha Dham, Harishchandra Ghat, Varanasi. Today the first children arrive on time at 11am. They are all local street kids and today they seem to look particularly dust covered and their hair more wild than usual, but as always their faces are smiling as they noisily climb the steps to the Ashram. Some run immediately up to us hugging our legs and requesting to play. Others are content to run and seat themselves immediately on the mats laid out for the meal.
