On December 7th, after their final health checks 19 patients were found to be healthy to undergo their cataract operations. The operations were performed at the Vivekanand Mission Hospital in Bhadohi, a rural village outside Varanasi. The recipients on this day came from both Varanasi and surrounding villages, having attended the camps held throughout the areas over the previous 2 weeks.
On December 15th the 9 additional patients from 20 presenting with cataracts underwent their free surgeries at the Varanasi Eye Hospital. The health of the remaining patients was not stable enough to undergo the surgery. All of these patients except one had been transported to Varanasi from surrounding rural areas. Their ages ranged from a 40 year old woman to the oldest, a 64 year old gentleman. Following their post-operative check ups all were transported back to their home villages with the necessary medications and dark glasses to protect their eyes. They also each received a gift from Sai Maa Vishnu Shakti Trust consisting of a crystal mala, a Hindi book of chants and a photo of Sai Maa, and will participate in another checkup 30 days after the surgery.
