Cataract Surgery: First Camp for 2016

1/6/2016

On January 5, the New Year brought with it the opportunity for the gift of eye sight for 15 patients suffering from cataracts.  The weather was unseasonably warm for this time of year.  Heat is a major factor the ophthalmologists must take into consideration in performing the cataract surgeries because of the risk of infection.  As the temperature increases, the risk of infection and therefore loss of vision, or even worse, loss of the eye, rises rapidly.  However today, the weather is perfect spring temperatures.

The latest eye camp was attended by more than 150 people, of which 45 met the screening criteria.  Out of these 45 potentials, only 19 passed the final tests and were accepted for the cataract operations.

The eye surgeons then operated on 15 of the patients, bringing this year’s program total to 91.  Not all of the potential patients are operated immediately, with some choosing other days or weekends.  However, Sai Maa Vishnu Shakti Trust is ahead of schedule for this year’s program and there will be only one more eye camp for the 2015-16 cataract program.

On the following day, I attend the post-operative orientation.  It is always such a joy for me to be at these completion ceremonies.  The cataract patients, who have stayed the night at the Vivekanand Mission Hospital, are brought together to receive prasad (blessed food) and a completion package.  This package includes not only their medicines and directions, but a care package from Sai Maa.

All of the patients are elderly, but they seem to take everything with a sense of ease and grace.  They are so grateful and appreciative for the privilege of receiving these operations.  I am always touched when, upon leaving, they chant in unison ‘Om Jai Jai Sai Maa’ in respect and acknowledgment of Sai Maa and the impact that Maa is having in their lives.
