Today we serve chickpea and vegetable curry, puris (fried bread) and the ever popular kheer (spiced rice pudding) to a total of 180 children and adults from the Harishchandra Ghat area. Most of the adults served are either parents accompanying their small children, the elderly, ill or unemployed – those who are in need of the extra nutrition being offered.
As a special treat for Holi we also share with the children chocolate and sweets donated by Sai Maa community members in Ireland and the US. The chocolate is especially popular with the children – although in some cases the chocolate pieces in the bag must have melted considerably as the children refused to let go of the small bags even while eating their hot food. It is amazing to observe that all the children without exception finish their meal before leaving with their treats – even without instruction. However, they are similar to children everywhere in that many of them request extra sweets as they leave, or try to wait in case there are extra sweets available at the end of the program. Sweets are popular everywhere.
