Today is just 5 days since our last visit, but already the number of children at the school has increased significantly to about 200. Today the Just One team is here for the first hot meal of this new school year. It’s only April 8th, but the hot sun is already blazing down and the school hours have been moved earlier in the day so the children are not walking home in the hottest part of the day.
Watching the youngest classes, it becomes clear just how young some of these children are. And at the same time, the strong sense of family in the Indian culture, and the caring community nurtured at the school is evident. Most of the new young children are a little surprised at the meal they are given, but with the encouragement of the teachers and the young girls serving they are soon eating heartily. One small boy of about 6 eventually devours about 10-12 puris and 3 servings of the vegetable stew as well as 2 servings of kheer- rice pudding!! His stomach is well satisfied after the meal.
But there are a handful of very small children who are looking at their food and looking at their neighbours eating the food but they do not pick up the pieces themselves. The young girls serving know immediately what these small children are waiting for. They are used to someone ripping their puris into smaller pieces for them so they can eat them easier. It is beautiful to watch the gentle interaction, and see the 3 year olds immediately begin to eat and enjoy the food Just One has provided them.
