The Shiva Ji Mission School in Laxmanpur, Varanasi follows the standard Uttar Pradesh state school terms, which means that on July 1st 2017 the new school term, and beginning of the school year, began. This was a Saturday so Nanku, the principal, expected attendance to be lower than normal. Given his assessment, the Just One team returned to support the nutritional intake of the Shiva Ji Mission School the following week, Saturday July 8th.
The oldest students were quickly directed to begin distributing the mangos with the Just One team - one to each of the approximately 200 students. They were eagerly received and excitedly smelt and generally admired by the 4 classrooms of younger children. The older children were more reserved in their acceptance however the gratitude was clear in their eyes that met ours and by the way they carefully handled the fruit. Due to the low attendance, the younger children were each given a second mango, a treat that was initially accepted with some confusion, but this quickly changed to more excitement as they understood this second fruit was also for them to eat.
