The Just One Program usually provides food to the children of the Shiva Ji MIssion School each Saturday. However last Saturday's program was postponed until today, Monday 29th August. Last Saturday the government closed all schools due to the flooding affecting large areas of Varanasi, but today they are again reopened. However the numbers of students attending remain lower today - around 250 students - due to the flooding.
Varanasi sits on the confluence of 3 rivers - the Varuna, the Assi and the mighty and sacred Ganga. Each year there is a significant rise in the river levels during the monsoon season, and locals are used to flooding in low lying areas close to the rivers. Heavy and long rains in the river catchment areas, combined with heavy monsoonal rains in the Varanasi area have made the flooding more significant this year - although it has not reached the levels of the 2013 floods.
The 250 children who returned to the school on the 39th each received 2 bananas as part of the Just One program. As usual smiles, joy and laughter accompanied the receipt of this gift. Each time their happiness is as pure and genuine as the last. Their pleasure in receiving never fades and both students and teachers remain openly grateful for the support of the Sai Maa Just One program.
