As well as the food provided by Sai Maa Vishnu Shakti Trust, today the children also offered entertainment for each other on a makeshift stage, as did their teachers. Some young children recited what they had learnt, such as the alphabet or other teachings, while the older children danced or sang. Embracing the multicultural nature of the slum communities, there was also a reenactment of the Christmas nativity scene, with a Hindu flavor. Aarti (a ritual involving the offering of light) was offered to the nativity scene before the dramatization and singing of the Christmas story.
The children were fed a traditional winter dish consisting of a special pounded rice, cooked with spices, fresh garden peas and roasted peanuts. A traditional savory pastry accompanied the rice. For dessert, each child received a banana and a muffin. It was interesting to watch the different reactions of the children to receiving these sweet treats. Like children everywhere, some immediately consumed the offerings with great delight even before eating their meals, while others placed them safely in their pockets and took them home with them at the end of a fun filled day.
