Water and electricity have been cut in the worst affected areas, and gas is too dangerous to use, so there is no way to cook food. Some families have lost their food stores with no money to replace them. Others spend their meager savings on street food. And the situation is worsening for these families as the water level continues to rise. On Sunday, a survey of local neighborhoods estimated 1,000 people would require meals. By Monday morning, this count had increased to 2.400.
We urge you to show your support by contributing from your heart to this Just One appeal. The food distributions have already commenced, and we are raising $5,000 to provide immediate support to an estimated 2,400 people. This appeal ends on Friday, August 30th 2013. Should the floodwaters continue to rise, Sai Maa Vishnu Shakti Trust may decide to extend this service to supply additional meals for these or more families until they have abated.
When you choose to ‘Donate Now’, the ‘Humanitarian Projects’ option will ensure that your donation assists those devastated by the floods in Varanasi. All monies donated by Aug 30th will be directly used to fund this project.
Because of the danger of entering the severely affected areas, and the contamination of the water these photos only show the furthest reaches of the floodwaters. ASMITA representatives estimated that the housing continued for a further 2 blocks with the water deepening as it became closer to the river.
