Sai Maa Women’s empowerment Project
in a recent survey India ranked as the 4th worst country in the world for their treatment of woman. Even today, in many areas Indian society is still strongly patriarchal and the women are bound by cultural traditions which offer few options when support is needed.
The Sai Maa Women's Empowerment Project is a joint collaboration between the Sai Maa Vishnu Shakti Trust and Social Action and Resource Centre (SARC), a prominent women’s support group based in Varanasi. The project supports women facing abuse or violence by offering them the opportunity to reclaim their lives, their dignity, and a place in their community. It is the first woman's empowerment center with an associated safe shelter in Varanasi managed by women, specifically for women.
The focus of this project is on providing immediate support for women in need, and offering education in the practical and psychological life skills needed to be powerful and productive members of their community. Services include counseling, medical, police and legal aid, vocational training and accommodation for those requiring short-term accommodation. The facilities are staffed by trained counselors and social workers, who call on the services of skilled volunteers and university students to provide the necessary level of support. This service is also part of a larger network of organizations working together to educate and improve the quality of life and the opportunities available to women throughout India. |
